Barbara Oelke

Barbara Oelke is a Maryland artist and author of the popular studio companion book, Drawing and Painting Horses, The Art of the Equine Form, published by Watson-Guptill.  

She is an award-winning artist who has been depicting scenes of the equine lifestyle for more than thirty-five years.  Her work has appeared in many invitational and juried exhibitions throughout the United States, and is included in numerous private collections.  

Barbara has studied painting at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree.  While at GWU, she was the recipient of the David Lloyd Kreeger award for two consecutive years and was selected as a finalist in the prestigious Prix de Rome competition.  

She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, and was awarded a Norfolk Fellowship for study at Yale University.  

In 1983, Barbara became one of the first full members of the American Academy of Equine Art.  Over the years she served as the organization’s vice-president, director of education, archivist and AAEA workshop instructor in painting and drawing.
